surfers’ notes

2017-2022

chapter I

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,

There is a field.

I’ll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass,

The world is too full to talk about.

Ideas, language, even the phrase ‘each other’,

Doesn’t make any sense.”

——Rumi

Surfers’ Notes is an ongoing project started in 2017 of young Chinese who have chosen surfing as a lifestyle.
The surf-based lifestyle has gradually formed community groups in China,
By traveling by the coast, with "nature", “surfers”,”community” and “surf" as clues into this way of life, I am searching for the spirit of why they surf, and what they share and feel beyond the act of "surfing" itself.
Surfers‘ Notes is my definition of idealism. It is romantic and a way to get to freedom and mind. I try to extract the natural romance, the wish from reality. During the shooting, it becomes my way of building a more authentic relationship with the world and people. I hope to explore how the individual can achieve a more balanced path with self, nature and life, And the possibility of exploring the wider nature of life, nature.

chapter II

“I’m seeking out a way to live.

And if it’s surfing,

That’s the way I’ll do it.

I’ll be a SURFER.

For the rest of my life.”

—— Andy Warhol

chapter III

“When I surf, I dance for Krishna.” —— Ted Spencer
